Overview

Cobb EMC is currently recruiting for an Engineering Design Technician I to provide all staking functions for system extensions and relocations and to communicate corporate service requirements to customers.

Responsibilities

Major Areas of Responsibility

The items listed are major responsibilities of this position. They are not intended to cover each aspect of the position as the scope and duties may change or be temporarily altered based on the current business needs of the Company. The basic requirement of every position is to perform all tasks as assigned by the reporting authority.

Line Extensions and Conversions
  • Design and stake all assigned multi- and single-phase line extensions and conversions, primarily on individual homes, subdivisions, small commercial assignments, and line conversions.
  • Design and stake distribution systems to conform to corporate and NESC specifications.
  • Complete Level 1 Distribution Design Training
  • Design lighting systems to conform to local government requirements and Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) specifications.
  • Learn and Maintain knowledge of AGI software for lighting designs.
  • Assist in designing street lighting templates.
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of O-Calc for pole loading and guying design.
  • Assist in developing pole loading and guying 3-D templates for pole line design.
  • Learn to collect GPS coordinates for field assets by using Top-Con units.
  • Collect and update GPS coordinates of poles and manholes in GIS.
  • Coordinate assigned jobs with other departments, other utilities, and governmental agencies.
  • Size transformers and conductors to adequately serve customer loads.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of underground and overhead specifications.
  • Recommend system improvements to maintain system integrity and reliability.
Easement and Right-of-Way Permits
  • Secure new service contracts from customers and developers.
  • Obtain information and maintain knowledge of federal, state, and county government specifications for securing permits and easements, including lane closure permits.
  • Maintain familiarity with other utilities' specifications for obtaining permits and encroachments.
  • Provide an accurate estimate of construction costs.
  • Obtain NPDES storm water permits as required by federal regulations.
Paperwork
  • Prepare written documents, including easements, contracts, and cost estimates, as required.
  • Ensure proper billing of new construction projects.
  • Record proper work order number on time sheets daily.
  • Prepare staking sheets, check drawings, and prepare all paperwork.
GIS & Work Management Systems (WMS)
  • Learn work order life cycle and assist in final work order processing.
  • Verify and ensure data accuracy and completeness between GIS and the iVUE systems.
  • Maintain and communicate current knowledge of WMS changes, procedures, and improvements.
  • Make positive suggestions for improving GIS &WMS operations and applications.
Customer Inquiries
  • Keep supervisor informed of any unusual customer complaints.
  • Ensure that all customer complaints from the field within area of responsibility are immediately resolved.
  • Ensure unresolved complaints are routed to the proper personnel within one day of notification.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Vocational/technical school diploma or equivalent in electrical or electronics technology or a related field.

Minimum six months experience in electrical distribution system design.

Thorough knowledge of corporate policies, procedures, construction specifications, and line extension practices.

Knowledge of GIS and Work management systems and electric utility equipment and materials.

Working knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).

SKILLS:

Excellent oral and written communication skills.        

Proven excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with customers.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Proficiency with personal computers.

Possess valid Georgia driver's license.

Ability to read panel schedules and riser diagrams and perform basic electrical calculations.
